Breakups: how they heal

Breakups: how they heal

A breakup rarely hurts only for the person who leaves. It hurts because you lose many things at once: an imagined future, a daily life of routines and small habits, even a version of yourself that existed only inside that relationship. That is why the loss is so large, and why it deserves to be met as real grief.

A breakup is grief

When you treat it as grief, you stop demanding that you tidy it away in a week. Grief keeps its own rhythms. There will be days of anger, days of longing, days of relief, sometimes all within the same afternoon. None of this means something is wrong with you. You are allowed to grieve even if the breakup was your decision, even if you know it was the right one, because logic and the heart rarely heal at the same pace.

Healing is not linear

One of the hardest parts is the sudden setbacks. After days of feeling better, a song, a neighbourhood or a date on the calendar pulls you back. This is not failure. It is how the healing of the heart works, in cycles, not in a straight line.

  • Keep steady routines for sleep, food and movement, they are the anchor of difficult days.
  • Lean on people who make you feel less alone.
  • Resist the urge to "re-read" the story looking for what went wrong.
  • Leave room for grief instead of rushing to fill it with a new relationship.
  • Be patient with your body: sleep and appetite need time to settle.

When the mind circles again and again

It is natural to analyse endlessly what could have gone differently. That search promises control, but usually keeps you tied to the past. Gradually, you can learn to leave the story open without needing a final, perfect explanation.

With time, the centre of gravity returns to you. You do not forget, but you stop living with your back turned to life.

Slowly, back to yourself

At some point you begin to rediscover who you are outside the relationship: what you enjoy, what you want, where you are going. This does not betray what you lived. It honours it, by letting you move forward.

If grief feels as though it has you stuck and time does not seem to help, you do not have to pass through it alone. At thestherapy, as psychologists in Thessaloniki, we stand beside you through a breakup, in person and online, in Greek and English, at the pace you truly need.
