Όρια: γιατί είναι τόσο δύσκολα και πώς τα βάζουμε

Όρια: γιατί είναι τόσο δύσκολα και πώς τα βάζουμε

Few things trouble us as much as saying one simple word: no. Many people who come to us describe the same exhaustion, a constant sense that they are always giving, always available, and that somewhere inside them an anger is building that they do not know where to put. Often the root lies in boundaries, or rather in their absence.

What a boundary really is

Many people confuse boundaries with selfishness, as if they were something harsh or rejecting. In reality the opposite is true. Saying no to something that drains you is not a rejection of the other person. It is care for yourself, and ultimately a condition for healthy relationships. A boundary does not build a wall between you and others. It marks where you end and the other begins, so that the relationship can exist without one person disappearing into the other.

Why they are so hard

Boundaries are hard because we often learned, very early, that our worth depends on being convenient, helpful and always available. We learned that no brings rejection, anger or disappointment, and that it is safer to give in. The price of this strategy is silent anger, constant tiredness, and relationships where we feel we give endlessly without receiving. Over time, constant yielding does not bring more love, it brings more distance.

No is not a rejection of the other person. It is care for yourself.

How to set a boundary in practice

A boundary does not need to be aggressive, nor to come with long justifications. In fact, the simpler and calmer it is, the more clearly it lands.

  • I cannot do that, but I can do this offers a boundary together with an alternative.
  • I will answer you tomorrow gives you time instead of a rushed yes.
  • I understand you need it, but I do not have that to give right now is honest and human.
  • You do not need a long explanation, a calm no is a complete sentence.
  • Watch your tone, firmness does not require harshness.

The guilt that comes at first

At first, every boundary will bring guilt. This is normal and does not mean you are doing something wrong. It simply means you are doing something new, something against an old habit. Guilt is not a compass, it is only the reaction of your old self. In time, boundaries bring something unexpected: not fewer relationships, but more honest ones. And with them come relief and respect, from others and, above all, from yourself.

If you struggle to set them alone

If you feel that you keep giving and emptying out, that you do not know how to say no without collapsing into guilt, you are not alone and you do not have to solve it alone. At thestherapy we are a team of psychologists in Thessaloniki, offering sessions in Greek and in English, in person and online. Boundaries can be learned, and practising them is one of the most freeing things you can do for yourself.
