You walk into a crowded room and immediately feel that every gaze turns towards you. Your heart pounds, your mind races to predict what others are thinking, your body wants to disappear. If this is familiar, it may not simply be shyness. Social anxiety is something deeper: an intense fear of being judged. At thestherapy we often meet people who silently carry this weight, and we want to say that there is a path towards greater freedom.
It is not simple shyness
Shyness is a disposition; social anxiety is a fear that narrows life. It is the intense dread of being judged, embarrassed or seen as "inadequate" in front of others. It can appear in a presentation, at a party, even in a simple phone call. The common thread is the sense that you are constantly under examination and that the slightest mistake will expose you.
Social anxiety does not shout "run". It whispers "they are watching, and you are not enough".
The trap of avoidance
When a situation frightens us, it is natural to avoid it. Avoidance brings immediate relief, and that is why it is so tempting. The problem is that in the long term it grows the fear. Every time you avoid, your brain "learns" that the situation really was dangerous and that you escaped because you avoided it. So your world slowly shrinks:
- You decline invitations you deeply wish you could accept.
- You avoid speaking in meetings, even when you have something to say.
- You over-prepare every interaction, as if sitting an exam.
- You leave early, before the thing you fear can happen.
The thoughts that magnify the fear
Behind social anxiety there often hide overly harsh thoughts about what others think. You assume they judge you negatively, that they noticed every awkwardness, that they remember you for your mistakes. In reality, other people are usually absorbed in their own worries. But anxiety works like a magnifying glass, making every small moment look like a catastrophe.
How we work in therapy
Therapy does not ask you to jump into the deep end. We work with gradual, controlled exposure, step by step, at a pace you can bear. Alongside this, we gently examine and challenge the harsh thoughts, searching for more realistic interpretations. You learn that anxiety, if you do not avoid it, peaks and then subsides on its own. Every time you stay within a situation and live it without the predicted disaster, your brain rewrites the story.
A life with fewer limits
The goal is not to never feel anxious again, that would not be human. The goal is for anxiety to no longer dictate your choices, so you can do what you want even when you feel some tension. If the gaze of others weighs on you and narrows your life, you do not have to face it alone. At thestherapy, in Thessaloniki or online, in Greek and in English, we can build together, with patience and respect, a path towards a world that opens up again.
