Psychodynamic therapy: why we look at the past

Psychodynamic therapy: why we look at the past

Why, even though you rationally know what you would like to do differently, do you find yourself again and again in the same situation? Why do certain patterns in your relationships or your life seem to repeat as if obeying a hidden logic? Psychodynamic therapy was born precisely from these questions, from the observation that a large part of us acts without our fully noticing it.

The core assumption

The psychodynamic approach holds that much of what troubles us today has roots in experiences and relationships we have not fully processed. A large part of our mental life operates below the threshold of awareness. We often repeat, without realising it, patterns that once made sense, that perhaps protected us at a time when we were vulnerable, but that today hold us back and hurt us.

Why we look at the past

We do not look at the past to find someone to blame or to stay stuck in old stories. We look at it in order to understand. There is an important difference:

  • Blame asks "whose fault is it?" and stops there, frozen.
  • Understanding asks "where does this come from and how is it still affecting me?" and opens a way forward.

When you see where a pattern comes from, it stops controlling you so absolutely. What you understand, you can begin to choose rather than merely endure. The past does not change, but your relationship with it can change deeply.

The therapeutic relationship as a tool

One of the most distinctive features of this approach is that the relationship between you and the therapist itself becomes a field of work. Within the safe space of therapy, the patterns you live outside often appear, alive and not only as narration: the way you trust or distrust, fear rejection, withdraw or cling. There, in real time, we can observe and work through them in a way that simply talking about the past cannot offer.

We do not heal by remembering the past, but by living an old experience differently within a new relationship.

A slower, deeper work

Psychodynamic therapy does not promise quick fixes. It is a more open, reflective process that gives things time to emerge at their own pace. This does not mean it is vague or endless. It means it respects the complexity of the person and does not rush to close what needs time to be understood. Often, real change comes not from a technique, but from the experience of being genuinely met by someone.

What you can expect

  • A space where you can speak freely, without filtering out what "does not make sense".
  • Curiosity rather than judgment toward your feelings and your dreams.
  • Connections between what you live now and earlier experiences.
  • A gradual understanding of the repeating patterns in your relationships.

Who it suits

This approach often suits people who feel they "know" why they struggle yet nothing changes, or who want to understand themselves in depth rather than only manage symptoms. At thestherapy, in Thessaloniki or online, in Greek and English, we work with respect for your own pace and your own story. The aim is not to become someone else, but to come to know, more freely and more fully, the self you already are.
