Wellness apps and AI: help or replacement?

Wellness apps and AI: help or replacement?

Never before have we carried so many tools for our mental health in our pockets. Mindfulness apps, mood journals, breathing exercises, even chatbots that answer at three in the morning when you cannot sleep. It is reasonable to wonder: do all these really help, or do they just give us the illusion that we are doing something? At thestherapy we believe the answer is not yes or no, but "it depends on how you use them".

What they can genuinely offer

Digital apps have some real advantages. They are available at any hour, they do not judge, and they help you build small habits. For someone just beginning to observe themselves, they can be a first, accessible door.

  • They remind you to pause within a crowded day.
  • They help you put a name to what you feel, which in itself brings relief.
  • They offer structured breathing or relaxation exercises when your body is tense.
  • They keep a record of your mood, so you can see patterns that would otherwise slip past you.

These are not small things. They are good assistants, especially between sessions or in periods when you want to keep a routine of care.

Where technology stops

There is, however, a limit no app can cross. Artificial intelligence can recognise words, but it cannot feel you. It can suggest a technique, but it cannot sit with you in the silence of a pain that finds no words. Therapy is not an exchange of information; it is a living meeting between two people.

A tool can guide you. Only a person can meet you.

Why the relationship cannot be replaced

What heals deeply is not the right piece of advice, but the experience of being held in someone's gaze without being judged. When you share something shameful and see that the other person does not flinch, something inside you softens. This correction happens within the relationship, in real time, with a person who remembers your story, notices the small changes in your voice and accompanies you through the hard parts. A chatbot does not worry about you at night, does not rejoice in your progress, does not carry the responsibility of care.

How to use them well

Good use is simple in principle: apps as a supplement, not a substitute. They can support the work you do in therapy, keep you connected to your goals, give you a breath in a difficult moment. They become a problem when you use them to avoid human contact, when the screen gradually replaces the voice of a friend or a therapist. Especially in moments of crisis or deep sadness, you need a person, not an algorithm.

A balance that respects you

You do not have to choose between technology and human relationship. You can have both, as long as you know what you are asking of each. If you wonder where self-help ends and the need for real support begins, that question alone deserves a conversation. At thestherapy, in Thessaloniki or online, in Greek and in English, we can find together the balance that suits you, using digital tools as an ally and keeping at the centre what no tool can give: the living human relationship.
