Work stress & balance

Work stress & balance

You open your eyes and the first thought is the work to do. You eat in front of the screen, answer messages after midnight, and even on holiday a part of you stays on alert. Work stress, in small doses, is normal and sometimes even useful; it gives us energy and focus. But it becomes a problem when it is chronic, when work follows you everywhere, and above all when your worth as a person begins to be equated with your performance.

When stress turns dangerous

There is a difference between the pressure of an intense period and the burnout that builds silently over months. Burnout is not simply tiredness; it is a deep exhaustion, emotional and physical, together with cynicism and a sense that nothing matters anymore. Often the most conscientious people are the most exposed, precisely because they find it hard to say "enough". The body usually sounds the alarm first: insomnia, headaches, irritability, frequent illness.

Balance is not equal time

When we hear "work life balance" we imagine a perfect division of hours. In reality, balance is not arithmetic. It is having genuine room for rest, for relationships, for things that give you meaning beyond work. A day can be full of work and still be balanced, as long as it has not swallowed every other part of yourself. The question is not how many hours you work, but whether, when you stop, you can truly stop.

Practical boundaries that help

  • Set a time when work "closes", and close the notifications with it.
  • Keep small breaks during the day, not only at its end.
  • Learn to say "no" or "not now" without lengthy justifications.
  • Protect a part of the week that belongs to no one but you.
  • Mind the basics: sleep, movement, food; they are not a luxury, they are fuel.

Beneath the stress, often something deeper

Practical boundaries help, but they rarely suffice on their own. Often underneath there is a belief: that I must do everything perfectly, that if I stop I will be rejected, that rest must be earned. These beliefs, which often come from long ago, make "no" feel dangerous and rest feel like laziness. The deeper work is to examine who told you that you are worth only as much as you produce.

You are not your productivity. You exist even when you produce nothing.

When work fills a gap

Sometimes we sink into work not only out of obligation, but because it offers us something: an identity, a sense of worth, a way of avoiding harder feelings or an empty personal life. If every time you stop you feel anxiety or emptiness, it is worth asking what work fills for you. This does not cancel out the love for what you do; it simply helps you not to let it become the single support holding up your whole life.

How we can work together

In therapy, we look at both levels: what can change practically in your daily life now, and what needs to settle inside you so that you can hold those boundaries without guilt. At "thestherapy", based in Thessaloniki, we meet in person and online, in Greek and in English, with flexibility that fits a full schedule. Work does not have to be the enemy of your life.
